Phoroi et dôra chez les Thraces

Abstract : The distinction between dôra and phoroi among the Thracians is variously interpreted. It is generally assumed that in the great Odrysian kingdom of the 5th century BC a system of informal payments, in non-monetary form (dôra), coexisted with a more institutionalized one (phoros), settled in coins. This binary perception, as well as the one making these two forms of takings the same indistinct category, are being questioned through the review of a set of numismatic, literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources. The case of the Greek cities paying dôra and phoroi to kings of the inner Thrace in the 4th and 3rd century BC helps clarifying the distinction between these two categories of payments in our sources.
