Composer avec les émotions : réfugiés et chercheuse dans la relation d’enquête

Abstract : Any sort of work will engage emotions of various natures. This article aims to contribute to epistemological reflecting emotions during investigational work involving career efforts among professional refugees in two European societies, France and Bulgaria. I studied the space taken up by emotions in an investigation through the prism of the investigational relationship as a specific type of work, which is part of the profession of researcher in the humanities and social sciences. Emotions are considered in investigational work as effects, tools and supports for action, as acting on the researcher-research subject relationship and as being acted upon by this relationship, adopting a Deweyan approach. Emotions, whether expressed or concealed, may signal maladjustments in the interaction between researchers and participants and may invite the investigative relationship to proceed in new directions. Investigative work thus engages in an « emotional work » which this article proposes to analyze, focusing on two dimensions of emotions : their situated character and their dramaturgical structure. These two dimensions refer to two perspectives of emotional work. The first one points to the role of the control of social information in interactions. The second emphasizes the fact that emotional work is related to relations of class dominance, gender and racialization.
