Mesurer les degrés d’engagement dans les mondes musicaux : Du public au non-public de musique metal

Abstract : This article suggests investigating the various forms of commitment or disengagement of the public and the non-public in the world of music. The examples which will be developed to illustrate this are partially pulled by a sociographic observation of the people who fill the French local metal music scenes. To deal with the question of the public involved in the logistics of production, we must put in contention some qualifications, composed of ‘fans’, ‘amateurs’, and ‘the enthusiast’, established and distinguished by the interviewed metal amateurs. It is also a matter of establishing a spectrum of those whose practices are less engaged and those whose practices are more involved. So, there is a segment of the public composed of only occasional consumers who are sometimes assimilated with the non-public. Thus, the objective is to explore the symbolic borders between various forms of consumption within a musical genre, whether or not it is deliberate and if it is strengthened by active practices within the musical world.
