Failure analysis of carbon fiber reinforced polymer multilayer composites during machining process

Abstract

Generally, damage mechanisms induced by machining of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites include four types of failure modes: transverse matrix cracking, fiber–matrix interface debonding, fiber rupture, and interply delamination. Compared to metals, relatively little research has been carried out on the failure analysis of composites. The current state of knowledge in this area of research is mainly limited to experimental studies, and only few theoretical models have been developed from the past few years.
