A New Design Approach of Hybrid AC/DC Microgrid System Based on Resilience Index and Lifecycle Cost Evaluation

Abstract : Several research dedicated to Hybrid AC/DC (HYB AC-DC) microgrid systems have recently taken momentum in rural electrification development. The main challenge for design engineers is to evaluate HYB AC-DC microgrid components are whether sufficiently resilient, reliable, and maintainable and if the grid is enough, with an optimal lifecycle cost (LCC) for the overall system. This paper proposes a new approach of hybrid AC/DC (HYB AC-DC) microgrid design based on resilience requirement and life cycle cost (LCC) optimization by varying the microgrid reliability and availability while considering constant failure rates for each component. Photovoltaic, wind turbine, battery bank, diesel generator, and AC-DC converters are the main microgrid components used for the LCC evaluation. The objective function in the optimization process is the LCC, and the related decision variables are the resilience index, reliability, availability, and redundancy index of each component. We used a constant failure rate of each component to model the LCC and have deduced the corresponding resilience index. The proposed method was applied based on a Genetic Algorithm.
