Guy de Maupassant dans les préfaces soviétiques : la biographie entre mythologisation et entreprise idéologique

Abstract : When one examines the biographical notices included in the forewords of Guy de Maupassant’s works published in the Soviet Union, one can see that they set up images of the author which nowadays look quite like a caricature. This leads us to show, firstly, how some significant parts of Maupassant’s life are highlighted, while others are sweetened, or even hushed up, not to say censored. Indeed it is possible to talk about a specific Soviet editorial strategy, since, through the choice of material and the way this is used, it leads to build an image of the biographed person which is rather the celebration of a myth than the result of historical investigation. This process of a mythologisation of the writer is all the more interesting since it takes its sources in an ideological substratum which is independent of the literary field, and that it has politically and culturally “correct” aims. Then we shall make an inventory of the constitutive elements of these myth biographies, and decide how they appear more like mythologemes than biographemes and to see how, little by little, they build a robot portrait of a Maupassant turned into a “homo sovieticus”. This way of posing the problem leads us, of course, to ask ourselves about the didactical function of this epidictic discourse that borrows its discourse figures from the myth.
