Effects of air entraining agent on the rheological properties and electrochemical parameters of cement mortar

Résumé

The durability of concrete is indirectly affected by its rheological properties at the early stage of hydration. Air entraining agent (AEA), which is widely used to improve the fluidity of cement mortar (CM), may alter the rheological properties of CM during the early hydration process. This study aims to investigate how AEA influences the physiochemical mechanism of the fluidity of CM. The rheological properties and consistency of CM containing AEA with different curing times were measured. Resistance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of CM were monitored using digital bridges and electrochemical workstations. The microstructure of hardened CM was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results revealed that AEA increased the consistency of CM, and the rheological parameters of CM changed more complicated. The resistance of CM increased with the increasing AEA dosage. The EIS curve displayed a unique electrochemical response that gradually moved to the upper right. The correlation analyses revealed that when the AEA dosage was between 0 and 0.08%, the resistance was negatively correlated with the consistency and favorably correlated with the rheological parameters, while when the AEA dosage exceeded 0.08%, the findings were entirely opposite. The varied correlations can be explained by the counterbalance between AEA’s heightened exothermic effect and the dual effects and existing forms of bubbles. The SEM findings showed that the bubbles introduced by AEA were presented in two forms: individual distribution and bubble bridge.
