Research on MMORPG: A bibliometric analysis overview covering 2000-2021

Abstract

This paper presents a general overview on Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) research using bibliometric indicators over the period 2000-2021 from Web of Science Core Collection database. The purpose of this paper is to provide a deeper empirical understanding of the most influential countries, authors and dissemination channels in the research on issues related to MMORPGs and in particular the process that leads to the purchase of virtual goods. The research is based on bibliometric analysis using citation data from articles, books and other documents and we analyse 479 MMROPG searches from 2000 to 2021. The results will help to identify potential weaknesses and gaps in scientific research on the subject. This will provide the scientific community with initial results that will serve as a springboard for future research in the field.
