De l'école à la taverne

Abstract

Master Eckhart is known for translating the concepts of scholasticism, reserved for the literate, into sermons in the vernacular, for the illiterate. However, he did not limit himself to a transfer from one language (Latin) to another (Middle High German). Metaphor is a trope that takes us out of language and into everyday experience. The example of the “barrel of wine” (circulus vini), used by the Scholastic masters to explain the analogia entis, does not function as a sign referring to something signified. For Eckhart, the sign stands in front of the tavern to invite passers-by to come and savour the wine. In other words, only experience is validated as a mode of knowledge.
