"L'apparition des armoiries sur les sceaux des évêques de Metz"
Résumé
The use of heraldry by clergy members began relatively late and its geographical adoption was varied. This text aims to contribute to the study of this phenomenon by examining its timeline, particularly in the context of the Diocese of Metz. The Diocese of Metz, located in the ecclesiastical province of Trier within the Holy Roman Empire, neighbored the dioceses of Verdun and Toul, under the same metropolitan, and Strasbourg, in the province of Mainz. To the west, it was bordered by the Archdiocese of Reims and to the south, by Besançon.
A review of Wilhelm Ewald's catalog of seals of the Archbishops of Trier dismisses the hypothesis of a direct influence of the metropolitan's seals on those of his suffragans. Comparisons with neighboring dioceses' productions also show limited impact on Metz. Similarities noted may be attributed to familial or personal connections among individuals who held various roles within this broad geographical area. Systematic comparisons between the seals of Metz bishops and those of their counterparts in Toul and Verdun further highlight the uniqueness of the sigillographic practices and images in Metz from Bertram (1179/80-1212) to Gerard de Reninge (1296-1302).
