Interactions entre les mécanismes de régulation du système cardiovasculaire et ceux de la posture : Etude du lien entre susceptibilité au malaise vasovagal et susceptibilité au mal des transports

Abstract : Motion sickness (MS), as well as vasovagal syncope (VVS), is common in the population, especially in children. Some symptoms of MS, pallor and cold sweating. Nevertheless the physiopathology of MS and VVS is only partially understood and the true nature of the particular susceptibility of some subjects remains completely unknown. Our aim was therefore to study the relationship between MS susceptibility and VVS susceptibility. Questionnaires about susceptibility to MS and to VVS or presyncope in adulthood and childhood, filled in by 899 students (20.4+-2.1 years, 405 men), were analysed. A relationship between MS susceptibility in adulthood and VVS susceptibility in childhood and adulthood (p = 0.004 and p = 0.005 respectively) was found. Despite the limitations of a retrospective study this relationship between MS susceptibility and VVS susceptibility seems to indicate that a common mechanism exists, explaining the particular susceptibility of some subjects to both disorders. This paradigm may prove useful in better understanding the true nature of MS and VVS. Data concerning vestibulo-autonomic interactions and, more widely, interactions between systems implicated in posture regulation, which play a role in MS, and those regulating the cardiovascular system, particularly the autonomic nervous system, are discussed. Possible further developments to progress in the understanding of the mechanisms underlying the particular susceptibility of some subjects to MS and VVS are presented.
