Elaboration, caractérisation et étude de l'insertion électrochimique du lithium dans des matériaux associant un élément métallique au graphite

Abstract : This study takes place within the framework of research on negative-electrode new materials for lithium-ion batteries. Several ways of synthesis are investigated to elaborate so-called composites materials associating graphite and antimony. The aim is to take advantage of the lithium reversible insertion both in the semi-metal structure and in graphite. Graphite intercalation compounds are used as precursors. A first system composed of graphite-antimony nanoparticles embedded in an organic matrix is obtained after antimony pentachloride reduction by an activated sodium hydride in solvent media. The good stability of the metal during oxidation/reduction electrochemical cycling is revealing. Attempts of introduction antimony particles between the graphitic layers by indirect method failed. Nevertheless antimony, pentachloride reduction by potassium intercalated graphite compound and cesium vapor phase action on beforehand intercalated antimony pentachloride leads to antimony-based graphite composite exhibiting electrochemical performances better than those observed in the absence of antimony. Finally, the antimony insertion is carried out by an indirect way after alloying it before with cesium. The resulting graphite insertion compound shows an interesting electrochemical behavior. Structural and morphological characteristics of the previous various systems are studied by X-Ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy in order to better understand the mechanisms which occur during lithium insertion.
