Traitement in situ des géomatériaux. Application aux grès de Pétra (Jordanie)

Abstract : Treatment of weathered building materials is based on impregnation or injection of products such as: mineral cements, silicate resins and organic resins. Since several decades, the use of these products on buildings involves severe contra-indications: shrinkage, weathering by UV radiations, formation of secondary products during the hardening (peroxides or hydroxydes), low depth of impregnation because of the high viscosity of resins, etc. Therefore, the efficacy of the treatment is limited. The aim of this work is to propose two new processes for the treatment of weathered building materials. The first one uses the vectorisation, a technique derived from medicine science. Vectors are very small particles electrically charged and containing artificial crystals of hydroxyapatite. These vectors migrate by electrophoresis into the porosity of weathered materials. By reference with fossilized shark's teeth founded into phosphatic deposits of Portugal and Morroco, the stability of hydroxyapatite is guaranteed. The second one proposes to synthesize an hydraulic cement (SOREL cement) by electrolysis of a zinc salt into the porosity of weathered materials. The treatment of cores of sandstone, sampled into the Champenay formation (Permian of Vosges, France), gives very good results. The two processes allow a good depth of treatment and a massive crystallization of the products into the pores of the sandstone. This work proposes, in application of the two processes, the treatment of weathered sandstone coming from the archeological site of Petra in Jordan. Required for the understanding of weathering mechanisms and essential for a treatment in situ, the diagnostic of weathering has been made at different scales: description of alteration on monuments, petrographical study on thin sections. This diagnostic provides the inventory of the different factors that lead to weathering: intrinsic factors of the sandstone (texture, structure) and environmental factors (hydrology, hydrogeology).
