Esthétique et modes opératoires en mathématiques : une exploration goodmanienne

Abstract : What is the meaning and what is the function of aesthetic in mathematics ? The first step in order to provide an answer to this question consists in describing, historically then systematically, the problematic which are linked to it. Close examination of conceivable solutions leads to choose Goodman's symptomatology of aesthetic as a tool for analysis. The ambition is not to show that mathematics are an Art but to show how mathematics takes from the languages of Art. Through the study of different examples of mathematical reasoning taken from arithmetic, geometry and analysis, it becomes possible to construct a semiotic solution to the initial question. A Goodman-type approach allows in particular to account for the semantic and syntactic aspects of mathematics - as a symbolic system - which contribute to their aesthetic value, and, on the other hand, to explain the cognitive contribute of the aesthetic dimension of mathematics.
