Du style des idées : l'aphorisme dans l'oeuvre d'André Gide

Abstract : Gide’s work is full of aphorisms. With an author who refused to see his own witty remarks set aside, the recurrence of such a figure of speech may be first understood as a characteristic of his style. Aphorism perfectly embodies all the distinctive features : firmness, density and precision. Then, its reticences to be detached turns it into a main component of Gide’s poetic diction in fictional, critical as well as personal work, where it enables the writer to stage the construction of his writing and the genesis of his ideas, in a pedagogic manner more than an authoritarian one. However, critics didn’t perceive this aesthetic teaching but rather saw a will to become the intellectual guide of a whole generation. The connexion to literary authority is indeed the problematic issue aphorism reflects and tackles.
