Evaluation des possibilités de la voie diélectrique pour le suivi en ligne des concentrations cellulaires dans les procédés biologiques industriels : définition d'un prototype

Abstract : The monitoring of biotechnological process as also the insurance of their optimized working conditions require the knowledge of biomass concentration. This parameter is still not easily, cheaply and reliably measurable on-line. Heterogeneous media exhibit dielectric relaxation process whose magnitude and characteristic frequencies are subordinate to electrical and geometrical properties of their various constituents. With regards to biological media, the capacitive charging of each of the interfaces formed by cytoplasmic membranes takes part of a biological medium is, beneath some MHz, an almost linear function of the volume fraction occupied by the cells. A part of our work has for result the understanding and the quantification of the difficulties linked to the specificity of dielectric measurements in industrial fermentation media. Then, we define the electrical (optimal frequency) and geometrical (cell constant and shape) parameters for a possible measuring device. The possible access to medium permittivity by a measurement of both admittance components is brought into relief and an on-line calibration procedure by the automatic determination of a correction parameter is proposed. Experimental validations lead to the feasibility of this way of determining the volume fraction occupied by the micro-organisms in industrial biological media. We plan a program evolution by the realization of a prototype that we define
