Etude des hétérogénéités morphologiques et énergétiques superficielles des kaolinites par AFM et adsorption de gaz

Abstract : This work is a contribution to the research on the surface properties of solid. The morphology and energetic heterogeneity of kaolinites were studied by coupling two approaches: low pressure argon adsorption and atomic force microscopy for tridimensional analyses of particles. The used samples are 1:1 kaolinite phyllosilicates obtained from the Clay Mineral Society (Kga1, Kaga2), from industrial origin (Khg) and from Decazeville area (France, Kdec). After purification, the samples were exchanged with monovalent cations Li+, Na+, K+, Cs+. Modelization of adsorption isotherms using the DIS (Derivative Isotherms Summation) method shows that the nature of surface cation influences the adsorption phenomena on edge and basal faces. On basal faces, cations are present only in small quantity, with strongly linked surface cations (substitutions) and surface cations physisorbed under the form of neutral compounds. On edge faces, the exchanged cations generate nanorugosity and take part to the first argon monolayer. As the consequence, the estimation of the lamellarity of kaolinite should be carried out with monovalent cations of small size (Li+, Na+) on the surface. This study shows also that atomic force microscopy can be used for the determination of the morphological properties of kaolinite in the case of samples homogenous in sizes and by analysing of a large number of particles
