Etude chimique et microbiologique des exopolymères de boues activées : éléments de compréhension du fonctionnement des stations d'épuration

Abstract : HPLC-SEC and FT-IR were coupled to investigate the molecular weight and nature of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from activated sludges. This study was performed at two levels: (i) macroscopic chromatographic approach which allowed to screen macromolecules of various sizes and (ii) microscopic spectroscopic approach to identify chemical species or more often their association. The EPS identified in activated sludge were collected in a chemical database which provides the basis for comparison wastewater treatment plants. The EPS chromatographic fingerprints of sludge from various origins remained stable in normal operating conditions, but were drastically modified during settling crises. This study was focused on the EPS extracted from the bacteria isolated from activated sludge of the paper industry. The two bacterial strains had very different kinetics of EPS production and the competitive effects on the EPS production have been clearly demonstrated
