Contribution à l'étude morphosédimentaire des "grèzes" lorraines

Abstract : The “grèzes litées” represent in Lorraine large volumes along the slopes facing toward the East or the North-East, in the "Meuse" "Moselle" valleys. The main outcrops are sites can be found on scarp faces. These deposits are mainly developped at the expense of upper oxfordian microcrystalline limestones or upper bajocian oolithic limestones. This work is a synthetic study of the grèzes in Lorraine. Its aim is mainly to determine and characterize each "grèze" formation and then, to explain its conditions of emplacement. The methodological bases of this study are sedimentology, morphosedimentary and microscopie analyses. The study of the slope deposit quarries of Commercy and Sampigny show that these deposits are contituted of three distinct formations, two of them being clearly identified. The three formations were emplaced during three successive periods of cold and wet climate. The observations made near Traveron, Dornrémy and Tilly cofirm the results obtained in Commercy and Sampigny bring new data about the "formation 1" which is present above Pagny sur Moselle, place of the piracy of the Moselle river, and is nearly lacking downstream. The rain wash remains the main mechanism of emplacement for the Lorraine “grèzes litées” deposits. Owing to the synthesis of data about the whole region, four main "grèze" formations have been identified. These four units are likely to be related to the major modifications in the morphoclimatic conditions during the end of the Saalian and the Weichselian. Compared to other West-European regions during the Pleistocene, it can be stated that the reddish "grèzes" and the pale ones are respectively of saalien and weichselian ages.
