L'accolade au contestataire : les films d'Ettore Scola entre 1969 et 1974 : l'émergence d'un cinéaste

Abstract : The seventies are marked by a major crisis for the Italian cinema: a drop in the number of tickets sold at the box office and a significant fall in the market shares due to the end of serial stories such as westerns. Comedies, however, best embody the crises. They were, at the time, a set genre having incorporated the whole array of political, social and film changers. Around 1960, a comedy was essentially social satire based on implicit view of the average filmgoer who had the same ideological beliefs as the filmmakers. Around 1968, young filmmakers denounced social satires as being the connective ally of the system and an alienating product of the cultural industry. The issue of the audience had been razed. What films should be made and for whom? Ettore Scola's films during that time period are imprinted with these questions and bear witness to a quest for a synthesis between a socially and politically useful cinema and the standard production systems. All this denotes the birth of an author. His films demonstrate a break with the standard codes of Italian comedies, but also the desire to stay in touch with their audiences in order to enlighten them. A potential new audience emerges: that of the antiestablishment youth. The similarity of ideals from one generation to the next creates a necessary new mode of communication which Scola uses to build a new usefulness for his work.
