Conception et réalisation de démultiplexeurs en longueur d'onde à réseau de guides sur InP

Abstract : To face growing interest in multimedia and broad-band interactive services, wavelength demultiplexing is one of the most promising techniques for increasing the capacity and flexibility of optical networks. The recent explosion of this market provides motivation for the development of new photonic components, necessary for all-optical networks. This thesis deals with one of those new devices : the phased-array wavelength demultiplexer. Details are presented concerning the design and realisation of two kinds of phased-array wavelength demultiplexers with different applications : the dense demultiplexer, with small wavelength spacing between output channels, for routing and switching ; the 1.31/1.55 um duplexer, for access networks. All the devices are realised on InP, which provides full compatibility with monolithic integration with semiconductor optical amplifiers, lasers or photodetectors, making possible new optoelectronic devices with even more complex functionalities. Several devices have been realised for which performance characteristics are presented. Compactness and wavelength insensitivity are obtained using a deeply-etched non-birefringent structure. The modal conversion that occurs in the grating, due to field deformation in the bent sections, is avoided with the introduction of progressive curves at the junctions between curved and straight waveguides, leading to very low crosstalk levels. New configurations of the waveguide array are given which limit the effects of effective index variations in the bent sections or reduce the size of the devices
