La réponse religieuse de W.H. Auden

Abstract : This thesis is primarily concerned with the nature and the quality of w.h. Auden's religious response after his return to christianity in 1940. A brief biographical introduction discusses his role as "political" poet of the thirties after which an analysis is made of his essay "the good life" (1935), his contribution to i believe (1939) and in particular of the new material made available by the publication for the first time in 1981 of his unfinished book the prolific and the devourer which, started in the summer and abandoned in the autumn of 1939, stands at the moment of transition between his overtly political stance of the thirties and his later commitment to christianity. The full development of auden's religious response is then traced, through his essays, articles and poetry (notably "new year letter" 1940), until it reaches its full flowering in "for the time being : a christmas oratorio" written in 1944 and "horae canonicae" (1949-1954). An examination of these works confirms the sincerity of his commitment to christianity after his rejection of the ideas of freud, marx and communism and places auden as one of the great religious poets of the twentieth century.
