L'exploration visuelle des pages Web : de la variabilité interindividuelle aux patterns d'exploration

Abstract : Research on the visual behavior of Internet users sometimes reports an average "pattern" supposed to guide web designers. However, between this posture which leads to schematize all the eye behaviors of Internet users and that consisting in considering these behaviors as being, in essence, individual, there would be an intermediate position considering the behaviors as typologies of patterns. In this thesis, we postulate that there are visual behavioral patterns that are defined as more or less similar behavioral patterns for a set of individuals. Our review of the literature shows that, on the one hand, research is frequently based on the notion of Area of Interest (AOI) in order to identify the areas which have recorded more or less oculometric indicators while their mode of definition has not been validated and that on the other hand, the methods of modeling eye behavior do not always seem to allow an exhaustive representation of scanpaths. These findings prompted us to first define an analysis method making it possible to reliably detect AOIs from oculometric data and then to compare the scanpaths taking into account all of their characteristics. Finally, we applied our analysis method to a set of experiments with different protocols and participants. Our results show in most cases 3 visual exploration patterns corresponding to 3 distinct ways of exploring web pages. These patterns do not seem to be intrinsically linked to individuals (little temporal stability), but rather adopted according to the context (of the website, of the task).
