De la clivée en th- à la structure the-N-is en anglais oral : vers une lecture discursive, prosodique et dialogique

Abstract : Studies on written English analyse the pseudo-cleft construction in view of the cleft construction. As such, it is studied as a focus marker and a syntactic restructuring device. Studies based on spontaneous spoken English, on the contrary, encourage us to investigate the pseudo-cleft alongside markers ranging from what Collins (1991) calls the th-cleft to markers such as the thing is, or, more generally, other variants around the lexico-grammatical pattern the-N-is. Despite their differences in terms of lexico-grammatical pattern, these markers exhibit a similar global syntactic structure, which consists in two parts articulated around a form of the copula be. However, they can be used to achieve various discourse functions in context. This multifunctionality can also be seen from the various names that have been given to these markers, such as specificational copular sentences, focus markers or projector phrases. The aim of this thesis is to explore what brings together into one discursive paradigm syntactic structures ranging from the th-cleft to the the-N-is construction. Its purpose will also be to study the linguistic and contextual parameters that trigger variations in their discourse functions. Basing our analysis on a corpus of spoken British English which we compiled, we intend to provide a discursive, prosodic and dialogical analysis of these linguistic markers. This corpus will be made up of scientific conferences, radio podcasts as well as one parliamentary debate. Through a qualitative analysis of the occurrences from this corpus, we will assess the role played by these different parameters and their impact on the discourse function achieved by these markers.
