The Scientific Publishing Market in the Digital Age : An Economic Analysis of Open Access

Abstract : Despite the digitization of information and the emergence of new knowledge dissemination models, allowing a free access to the scientific knowledge, the Open Access (OA) is still not the first scholars' publishing choice. This thesis aims to understand the barriers to the transition from the Open Access system to the traditional one, namely the Closed Access (CA). The research question is developed throughout five chapters. Through a literature review, the first one explains the functioning of the scientific publishing market and the consequences of the digitization of information. In particular, the analysis focuses on three main institutions, namely copyright, social norms and the new legal tools that regulate knowledge dissemination in the digital age. In the second chapter, we study the social and legal norms regulating the scientific publishing market and their reciprocal influence, characterizing the evolution of the institutional framework. Using data from an original dataset we built, in the third chapter we question the role of copyright, defined by the literature as one of the main barriers to the OA publishing. In the fourth chapter, we question the influence of journal rank on scholars’ attitudes to adopting the green model. We focus our attention on the economics discipline and use data from HAL, the largest archive in the French scientific landscape. The ranks of both national and international journals were used to enrich our dataset. Finally, in the fifth chapter, we propose an analysis of the scientific knowledge as a commons. We apply the Institutional Analysis Development framework to the scientific publishing market to understand the impact of the digitalization of information over the different stakeholders’ interests and the scientific knowledge value chain.
