La recherche du jardin perdu : Tentative de restitution des jardins perdus chez Claude Simon, Jacques Roubaud et Jean- Paul Goux

Abstract : To many authors and in particular Claude Simon, Jean-Paul Goux or Jacques Roubaud, the strong presence of the garden as a motif in contemporary literature evokes a kind of melancholy search, in that it leads to a form of failure, as the lost garden is only glimpsed, thus remaining shrouded in the constraints of the past or underneath the layers of the current garden. The narrative, the narrator, and the characters contribute to rediscover, to build and to bring back memories of this lost space whereas Time, Nature, and History altered, destroyed and covered it. So melancholy sets up when the attempts in throwing lights on the layers of the palimpsest fail or remain incomplete or fragmentary. Then we can consider it as a writing tool, as a real narrative machine, the dialectic between the desire to tell and an admission of failure, enabling the narrative to build itself and to go forward, so to admit failure but also to give a glimpse of the garden as the object of a long search.
