Memories of a forgotten crusade

Abstract : In this paper, my aim is to show how people experienced the presence of the mercenaries and the passage of the crusaders by using contemporary missiles, French and German chronicles, where one can find the personal tone, the description of the feelings of the people who were unlucky enough to meet the companies and were lucky enough to survive this encounter. Apart from the different 14th century chronicles, I found the Archives in Alsace particularly important in gaining first hand information on the emotions especially in Strasbourg and Colmar, where the correspondence of the Imperial cities was preserved. These letters, dated around the middle of the 1360s, have such a very personal note which I attempted to render in the English translations. According to the relevant sources, shock was the primary experience of the people. These sources help us to understand the origins of their feelings.
