Experimental Investigation of the Mechanical Behavior of an AlSi-PE Abradable Coating at High Strain Rates for a Large Range of Temperatures

Abstract

Abradable seal systems are used in aircraft engines to increase the overall efficiency by reducing the clearance between rotating blades and the casing. To optimize the performance of abradable seals before running experiments, simulation of blade tip/abradable interactions can be carried on. Such models require data on the mechanical behavior of abradable material at strain rate and temperature ranges representative of blade interaction. This paper introduces abradable dynamic compression with strain rates higher than 103 s−1 and temperature up to 360 °C on a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB). The macroscopic thermomechanical behavior showed a strong temperature and no strain rate dependence over the ranges investigated.
