AI as a conversational tool

Anouchka Divoux

Abstract

As A.I. and conversational agents become of growing importance in our everyday life, the integration of such tools in the context of language learning needs to be addressed by teachers. While the majority of existing chatbots are becoming increasingly effective and useful to practice writing skills, those dedicated to speaking skills are quite rare. More importantly, they seem to be based on written linguistic models, therefore hardly representative of the reality of oral productions. In this workshop, we'll be looking at how the Chat GPT tool can be integrated into language courses by diverting it from its original use (text generation) to practice speaking skills. This tool generates a variety of scripts in accordance with a set of predefined rules and seems to be a great teaching resource, while having obvious limitations due to a lack of information on the spoken interactional system.
