Etude du comportement tribologique du graphite sous gaz inertes

Abstract : Graphite is well known to present good tribological properties under reactive environment such as ambient air, in which, the presence of water vapour contained as moisture settles a low friction coefficient ranging betwee 0,1 and 0,15 and a very low wear rate. However, the working of electric collector or sliding mecanisms constituted by graphite metal couple under his kind of gaseous environment can produce an oxidation or a corrosion and affect the frictional conditions. The results of this research show that the presence of inerk gases under pressures close to the atmosphere can lead to a super lubricated state of graphite which exhibits s a friction coefficient ranging between 0,02 and 0,05. This lubricating effect of inert gases can take place only in a mechanical way, without chemical passivation phenomenon. This work presents on one hand, a technological interest because friction under inert gases permits to eliminate problems in connection with oxidation and corrosion, maintaining (indeed ameliorating) the frictional conditions. It concerns principally sliding mecanisms and electric contact which usualy work under confined, oxidizing or moist atmosphere. On another and, this innovating study has permitted to understand the processes involved in the graphite lubrication and principally to dissociate the mechanical phenomenon of crystallites orientation and the phenomenon of the surface chemical passivation
