L’innovation produit et performance exportatrice des petits exportateurs : le rôle-clé des importateurs dans le développement des nouveaux produits

Abstract : Product innovation helps to improve SMEs export performance. Exporting SMEs often collaborate with their foreign importers to develop or adapt products for export markets. To the best of our knowledge, little research exists on the impact of exporter-importer collaboration on the performance of innovations originating from these collaborations. Our research analyzes the relational mechanisms that would stimulate exporter-importer collaborations for innovation. We identified and tested two factors. The first is the relational norm of cooperation, which includes the partners' expectations of working together, helping each other, and achieving common goals. The second is the importer role performance, which evaluates how well the importer meets his obligations. Our results suggest that innovation originating from collaborations has a positive impact on export performance. The commercial success of the importer has a stronger positive influence on the co-development of innovations than cooperation.
