Les Grecs des confins : langue, culture et mentalité à travers les épigrammes funéraires sur pierre du Ve siècle avant J.-Chr. au Ier siècle après J.-Chr.

Abstract : The present study concerns language, culture and representations of the Greek and Hellenized populations who lived in cities or colonies in the borders of the Greek world, and who were in constant contact with barbarous populations. Our work is based on the testimony of funerary inscriptions actually inscribed on stones, from the fifth century B.C. to the first century A.C., which were found in the North and West of the Black Sea, in Asia Minor and in South of the Mediterranean Sea. We decided to exclude from our corpus the inscriptions of the Greek Anthology, in order to set aside masterpieces written by the most famous Greek poets and inscriptions which were not, actually, inscribed on stones. The poetic and technic dimensions of those inscriptions enable them to illustrate the degree of acculturation of border populations through their knowledge of the language and canons of that specific literary genre. In fine, our work allows the compilation of a corpus of revised texts and translations. Concerning the selection of the inscriptions, we have checked all the collections of inscriptions, such as W. Peek, Griechische Vers-Inschriften, R. Merkelbach, J. Stauber, Steinepigramme aus dem griechischen Osten, É. Bernand, Inscriptions métriques de l’Égypte Greco-romaine, but also the reviews likely to edit funerary epigrams, such as the Revue des études grecques, or the Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphic. Epigraphic and linguistic commentaries follow each inscription for the purposes of debating the establishment of the texts and pointing or solving their potential difficulties. Three indices (a general index, an index of mythological names, an index of personal names and an index of geographical names) were made up, as well as a table of concordance linking the different editions in order to make the corpus manageable and practical.
