Sur La Raison graphique. La domestication de la pensée sauvage de Jack Goody

Abstract : Jack Goody’s book The Domestication of the savage mind (1977) quickly became a classic in social science – scriptural science first of all. However, the anthropologist suggests to consider written language less as a – more or less sophisticated – functional code of speech transcription than as a specific mode of (re-)production of thought. Analyzes of this graphic order (manuscript, printed, digital) tend to highlight how the tabular structure and the hierarchical ordering of the page (graph, table, index, list, etc.) inform a new report to the language and to the world (objectification, abstraction, distancing, memorization, etc.). Yet, as the original title of the book indicates, this exponential and multiform influence of written communication takes place in logics of permanent linguistic hybridizations and at the cost of a necessary and often harsh domestication of the savage mind. The present contribution examines some aspects of historical and educational, cognitive and semiotic, cultural and symbolic processes, trying to clarify what we can hear and expect from this famous savage mind (Lévi-Strauss, 1962), largely synonymous with oral (de-)reason.
